Spain gave Louisiana back to France in 1800. In order to finance plans for European conquest, Napoleon was offering to sell the Louisiana Territory to the U.S. In 1803, the U.S. paid $11.25 million for the territory. The United States had doubled it's size. Explorers began to travel the new land. Lewis and Clark were some of the first explorers.
